Yesterday, Vitrox Company has sent 2 peoples come to our school to give a career talk. Well, I was there as some rumor said that the company’s pay was not bad after all and I do not know much about that company. I think it is not a bad idea to spend some time and go listen although I plan to continue my study after all.
I was happy to hear that the benefit and salary provide by Vitrox is almost the same like those other multi nation company, but there are something I piss off when they mention Computer Science (CS) student usually will have lower pay then those from Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EE). Why Computer Science student must mark a lower rank compare with those EE student? Well, that kind of thing always happens in industrial world, but I just not happy to hear from someone outsider saying this.
After that, the girl (from Vitrox) said, “I’m surprise to found that EE student all done well in the programming test we given compare with CS student.” The first thing came into my mind, “What the xxxx? You must be kidding.” I bet they did perform any search or research on CS before they come. I was so upset with that sentence. I pack my thing and walk out that time as I have no longer have any interest to listen anymore.
After that, I go have a lunch with my friend who just got an interview from Vitrox. She told me that the test mostly covers C programming and many other non Computer Science related thing. Now I know why CS student done badly compare with EE student. EE student only learn C programming while our Computer Science student learn so many type of languages (C, C++, HTML, PHP, Java, C#, VB .NET, ASP, Perl, and etc). They are just comparing an apple with an orange. Did they done a search on USM CS school achievement before they come to hire the student? I bet not, while they just come and blindly search for people.
If Vitrox think that EE students are just better than CS students then go ahead hire all EE students to build a software department, why come to our CS students. They are just like the other who thinks CS student must know how to fix a hardware problem PC. Thanks to the talk, now Vitrox are no longer listed in my top listed company to apply, although I admitted that I may still apply this company if I really jobless in the future, but this company has just give me a bad first impression.

LOLOLOL...
Just ask me can already lor.. XD so you know who am I liao??
Oh that, er, sigh, most probably.. What do you think? Stay in Penang better?
PS. I took some time to find out who you are too when you add me in msn msgr.. HAHAHAHA..
PPS. I rarely use my English name in public, too many people joke about it. :S
Mr Ooi,
That is entirely the recruiters' personal opinion - not Vitrox's, and certainly not other employers'/recruiters'. It is best described as a generalization made from an a set of biased samples.
Vitrox specializes in machine vision. And it so happened that USM's EE students (not other local unis' EE students) have a "leaning" in the related disciplines that the recruiters were looking for. That's all.
I bet those USM EE students will fail miserably if they were tested on topics such as C++ STL, Boost, Win32/64 APIs, and etc.
What is important is - always keep an open mind. Try not to pass judgements that will limit your ability to take inputs. Cheers.
Ralph.
Hi Keng siang,
I know you, you are the one who get no 1 in CS competition (forgot which competition i think is Imagine cup right?)
I also same with your USM CS student senior, i bet you saw me before, you are in grid lab now right ? :)
Anyway, Vitrox did gave some bad impression. I remembered last time when i go to having interview, they came to our school recruit people. guess what ? in the end, nobody is in the list. Their interviewer attitude tottaly make me disappointed. They thought that they were so good. And yes i give up on vitrox already for few reason
Reason 1 : Knowledge too spcify make your future carrier limited
Reason 2 : Bad impression just i mention above
Reason 3 : my collegue's friend working inside before, and he told us that their attitude problem too.
So, no matter how good salary wise, if working inside not happy also is useless. Remember find a job can have a better future.
** I saw your competion web designing + functioning quite stunning, and Web developer is a good future :) (i just my own opinion) . Cheers!
From Simon
Wow you sure are bitter. How is comparing the C skills of EE and CS students like comparing apples and oranges? It's not like they're testing EE students for C and testing CS students with a different language.
"Now I know why CS student done badly compare with EE student. EE student only learn C programming while our Computer Science student learn so many type of languages."
-Learning many languages makes you worse in one?
To Ralph, I bet they're simply stating facts from their own experience. No biased generalization there. So maybe an EE student won't pass all those CS tests, but would a CS student pass any EE subjects? For example, those relating to machine vision?
Simply put, Vitrox was testing for what they wanted, and from past experiences they found out that EE students are better at doing that.
I agree with the last part though. If EE students do better in their programming tests and Vitrox thinks EE students are better, they really shouldn't have bothered with the CS students anyway. Cheers.
